Pelindo III Plans To Extend Its Subsidiary Ports

In a bid to anticipate probable heavy stagnancy, state port operator PT Pelindo III is planning to extend its subsidiary ports. This is to improve the ports competitiveness, following the enactment of the shipping bill No 17/2008 that ends Pelindo monopoly and allows private companies to develop and operate ports. The projects will run in long-term programs with trillion rupiah investment value.

Hanjin Heavy Wins 141b Won Ship Deal

Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co, the first South Korean shipyard operator to export ships, has received an order to build two container vessels worth 141.3 billion won (S$191 million) from a European customer. The ships will be delivered by July 31, 2010, the Busan-based company said in a regulatory filing yesterday, without naming the buyer.

Coffee Climbs As Indonesia's Harvest Nears End ; Sugar Rebounds

Robusta coffee rose in London as the harvest nears an end in Indonesia, the world's third-largest supplier. Sugar erased declines and cocoa also gained. More beans from Vietnam and Indonesia contributed to a 9.1 percent drop in coffee prices through yesterday from a three- month high of $2,554 a metric ton on July 3. Supplies from Brazil, the world's largest grower, are also ``drying up a bit'' after wet weather delayed this year's harvest, said Stefan Uhlenbrock, an analyst at German research company F.O. Licht.

Unilever Sells North American Detergents Business

Unilever NV said Monday it has agreed to sell its North American laundry detergents business, including the All, Snuggle, Wisk and Surf brands, to a private equity investor for $1.45 billion. The buyer, Vestar Capital Partners, plans to combine the businesses with its Huish Detergents Inc. business that includes the Sun and White Rain brands and call the new company The Sun Products Corp. Huish also makes detergents, fabric softeners, dish care and personal care products under private label names for major retailers.

Somali pirates have hijacked a 52,454 dwt bulk carrier in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia's Puntland province. According to press reports the Panama-flag, 2007-built Stella Maris was seized on Sunday. The ship is managed by Tokyo-based company MMS and is believed to have 18 crew on board.
